History and Heritage

Background and History

Oakwood Cemetery is located at the corner of Northline and Biddle Avenue.  The cemetery sits at the foot of what was once the Clark family farm.

  • On June 27, 1826, Catherine Clark passed away at the age of 11.  She would be buried at the end of the family farm.

  • The following year, Catherine's father John died.  He would be buried next to Catherine on the farm.

  • After the passing of Catherine and John, the Clark family moved away from the farm.

  • Years after moving away Catherine's brothers John and George Clark were able to purchase back the land where the cemetery currently sits.

  • In 1869, John and George officially opened Oakwood up for active burials.  The brothers wanted to create a cemetery where anybody could be buried regardless of religion, race, or social status.

Oakwood is home to more than 1900 (known) residents.  Residents include soldiers, slaves, religious leaders, librarians, former mayors of Wyandotte, and more.  Unfortunately, the last grounds keeper of Oakwood was filled with rage when he was fired from his job.  After losing his position in the cemetery he decided to burn all of the cemetery burial records.  With a lot of research and Henry Thon's ledgers we were able to locate the names of more than 1800 people who Thon's funeral home buried in Oakwood.
